How Often Should I Change My Air Filter?
How Often Should I Change My Air Filter?

Your HVAC air filter is one of the smallest and least expensive parts of your heating and cooling system, but it plays a pretty important role. At Performance Heating & Air, one of the things we talk about with homeowners all the time is how often they should actually be changing their filter.
The short answer? It depends on your home and the type of filter you're using.
A good rule of thumb is to check your filter about once a month. You may not need to replace it every month, but checking it regularly lets you catch a dirty filter before it starts causing problems.
Why Is Changing Your Air Filter Important?
Your filter catches dust, dirt, pet hair, and other particles before they make their way through your HVAC system.
When the filter gets packed with debris, it can restrict airflow. Your system then has to work harder to move air throughout your home.
A dirty filter can contribute to:
- Reduced airflow from your vents
- Longer heating and cooling cycles
- Reduced comfort
- Higher energy use
- A frozen evaporator coil
- Additional stress on your HVAC system
Something as simple as changing your filter regularly can go a long way toward helping your system operate properly.
How Often Should You Actually Change It?
There's no single schedule that works for every home.
Here are some general guidelines:
Every 1–3 Months
This is a common range for many standard disposable filters.
If you have a home without pets and don't have significant indoor air-quality concerns, you may be able to go closer to the three-month mark.
Every 1–2 Months
If you have pets, your filter may collect hair and dander much faster.
Homes with multiple pets may need even more frequent filter changes.
Every Month
If someone in your household has allergies or you notice your filter getting dirty quickly, checking and changing it monthly may be a better approach.
The important thing isn't necessarily the calendar—it's the condition of the filter.
What Does a Dirty Filter Look Like?
This is something you can easily check yourself.
Take the filter out and look at it under good lighting. If it's covered in dust and debris or you can barely see the filter material, it's probably time for a replacement.
When in doubt, replacing an inexpensive filter is usually better than letting a severely clogged filter restrict your system's airflow.
Can a Dirty Filter Cause My AC to Freeze?
Yes, it can.
This is something we see during service calls.
When airflow becomes restricted, the evaporator coil may get too cold and freeze. Once that happens, your AC won't be able to properly remove heat from your home.
You may notice:
- Ice on the indoor unit or refrigerant lines
- Weak airflow from the vents
- Warm air coming from the vents
- The system running for long periods
If you notice ice, turn the system off and allow it to thaw. If the problem continues, it's a good idea to have the system inspected.
Does a More Expensive Filter Mean a Better Filter?
Not necessarily.
It's easy to assume that the highest-rated filter is automatically the best choice for your HVAC system, but that's not always the case.
Some very restrictive filters can reduce airflow if your HVAC system isn't designed to handle them.
That's why we recommend using the filter type and efficiency rating appropriate for your particular system. If you're unsure what your system needs, we're happy to help you figure it out.
Don't Forget About Your Filter During Maintenance
Changing your filter is one of the easiest things a homeowner can do to help take care of their HVAC system, but it's only one piece of the puzzle.
During a professional maintenance visit, we look at the system as a whole to make sure it's operating properly and catch potential problems before they turn into unexpected breakdowns.
At Performance Heating & Air, we also offer maintenance customers 10% off repairs found during their maintenance visit, along with priority service and a waived service fee when a part is needed.
Our goal isn't just to fix your system when something breaks. We want to help you keep it running reliably.
One Simple HVAC Habit Can Make a Big Difference
If you can't remember the last time you checked your air filter, this is your reminder to take a look.
Set a reminder on your phone to check it once a month. If it's dirty, replace it. If it still looks clean, check it again next month.
It's a small thing, but keeping up with your filter can help your HVAC system maintain proper airflow and keep your home comfortable.
